COLLAGE, The Art & Science of Healthy Aging® was created in 2005 as a joint venture between Kendal Outreach, LLC (KO), a not-for-profit that is part of The Kendal Corporation, and the Institute for Aging Research/Hebrew SeniorLife (IFAR), a not-for-profit organization affiliated with Harvard Medical School. KO specializes in creative solutions for healthcare. The pioneer of restraint-free care, KO has over 30 years of management and operational experience in the development and execution of comprehensive approaches to safe, individualized care practices. IFAR conducts medical and social studies, and is at the forefront of developing a variety of strategies for maximizing individuals' strength, vigor and physical well-being as well as their cognitive and functional independence in late life.
KOLLC and IFAR collaborate with interRAI, a network of researchers, policymakers and clinicians in over 25 countries committed to improving health care for older people and people with disabilities. interRAI promotes evidence-based practice and informed program development through the collection and interpretation of high quality data from scientifically derived assessment systems.
One of The Kendal Corporation's board members, a physician, fellow with interRAI, and former Chief, Health of the Elderly Programme, World Health Organization, Knight Steel, raised Kendal's consciousness at a meeting several years ago when he asked, “How do you know that the health and wellness programs and services offered to your clients are effective and promote healthy aging? Do you have a way to measure outcomes and link resident information with organizational performance?” Knight’s imperative was clear. Any assumption that our programs and services at any point in time are inherently well-targeted, appropriate and effective in advancing our clients’ healthy aging is flawed. Organizations that serve older adults must find a way to use outcomes to promote the redesign of existing services and the creation of new and targeted ones. The impetus for the development of COLLAGE came out of that conversation.
COLLAGE envisions an aging services field that uses valid and reliable assessment tools that implicitly link the needs, interests and preferences of clients to the development of high quality programs and services that advance healthy aging for individuals and organizations.
